Meet Our Founder
Clinician & Community Advocate: Karla Arroyo
Karla Arroyo, founder of the Multicultural Counseling Center, is a clinician and community advocate with over 20 years of experience. Originally from Mexico City, she holds a doctorate in Social Work from the University of Utah and specializes in trauma-focused therapy for children and adults.
Karla is certified in multiple evidence-based practices and is passionate about helping individuals and communities heal. Outside of work, she enjoys the outdoors and spending time with her family.

Our supervisors are culturally responsive leaders, offering guidance and support with empathy and expertise. They are dedicated to mentoring our team and ensuring every step of your journey is met with understanding, insight, and encouragement.

Director of Finance and Operations
Taylor Thayer
- CFO, COO, CPA -
Taylor, a Lindon, Utah native, earned her Bachelor’s (2021) and Master’s (2023) degrees in Accounting from Utah Valley University, where she attended on a track and field scholarship. She is currently pursuing CPA licensure in Utah.
At the Multicultural Counseling Center, Taylor oversees financial strategy and streamlines daily operations, contributing to the center’s growth and efficiency. Outside of work, she enjoys running, reading novels, attending local concerts, and spending time with her husband.

Deputy Clinical Director
Chelsea Montoya
- CMCH -
Chelsea, a Las Vegas native, earned her Bachelor’s in Psychology from Weber State University and her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from UNLV. She specializes in trauma-focused therapy for all ages, using TF-CBT, EMDR, and play-based approaches.

At the Multicultural Counseling Center, Chelsea provides culturally responsive care with a focus on the Latinx community. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and time with her 8-year-old son.

Joanne Brito
- CM, CPPS -
Adriana, originally from Veracruz, Mexico, relocated to Utah at age four and earned her Bachelor’s in Social Work from the University of Utah in 2020. She began her career at the Multicultural Counseling Center as a Case Management intern and has served as a Skills Counselor since 2022, supporting therapists and teaching clients essential mental health skills.

Outside of work, Adriana enjoys reading, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.

Andrea Ochoa

Andrea, originally from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, earned her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Utah with a minor in Criminology. She works with children ages five and up, using Play Therapy, Sand Tray Therapy, CBT, and mindfulness-based approaches.

At the Multicultural Counseling Center, Andrea is passionate about supporting the Latino community. In her free time, she enjoys trying new foods, spending time with family, and exploring the outdoors with her German Shepherd Husky.

Javier Campos

Javier, originally from Colombia, earned his Master’s in Social Work from the University of Utah. He is a bilingual therapist at the Multicultural Counseling Center and teaches at SLCC and the U of U, specializing in CBT, MI, trauma-informed care, and mindfulness.
With 14+ years in nonprofit work, he is committed to supporting underserved communities. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, writing poetry, and being with family.

Ruben, originally from Pachuca, Mexico, earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s in Social Work from the University of Utah. He specializes in trauma-informed, client-centered therapy with couples, teens, and families.
He is passionate about helping clients build resilience and stronger relationships. Outside of work, he enjoys coaching sports, dancing, traveling, and time with his wife and six children.

Patricia, originally from Jalisco, Mexico, earned her Bachelor’s in Social Work from Utah Valley University and her Master’s from Boise State University. She is certified in TF-CBT and domestic violence treatment and works with clients of all ages, focusing on anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationships.

At the Multicultural Counseling Center, Patricia is dedicated to supporting the Latinx community and reducing mental health stigma. In her free time, she enjoys music, sightseeing, reading, and traveling.

Megan Anderson

Megan, originally from Lafayette, Louisiana, earned her Master’s in Social Work from Southern University of New Orleans and is pursuing LCSW licensure. She specializes in mindfulness-based therapy, CBT, and strengths-based approaches to support adults with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and relationship challenges.
Passionate about guiding clients through self-discovery, Megan helps them align their goals and values. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, thrifting, and spending time with her husband and two children.

Marc Avalos

Marc, a Chicano therapist born in Compton, California and raised in West Valley City, Utah, primarily works with children and adolescents but welcomes clients of all ages.
He is trained in play therapy and integrates mindfulness, DBT, and IFS in his practice. Bilingual in English and Spanish, Marc is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive space for all.

Evelyn, originally from Mexico, moved to the U.S. at 16 and pursued social work with certifications in Positive Psychology and Substance Use Disorder. She is dedicated to supporting the Latino community, especially those affected by domestic violence and substance abuse.

At the Multicultural Counseling Center, Evelyn provides compassionate care to empower her clients. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and dog and listening to music.

Melannie, born and raised in Salt Lake County, earned her Bachelor’s and Substance Use Disorder Counseling certificate from the University of Utah and will return for her Master’s in 2024.
She specializes in CBT, mindfulness, and skills-based support for anxiety, depression, and substance use. Passionate about advocating for mental health in the Hispanic community, she enjoys sports, concerts, and time with loved ones.

Rachel, a Clinical Mental Health Counselor, holds a background in social work and child development with a focus on trauma-informed care and cultural competency. She works with clients of all ages, specializing in EFT, CBT, DBT, and art/play therapy to address anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Abigail, originally from Cuba, earned her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Utah and is a certified Substance Use Disorder Counselor (SUDC). She specializes in trauma, addiction, anxiety, depression, and life transitions, using CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed care.

At the Multicultural Counseling Center, Abigail fosters a warm, supportive environment to help clients heal and grow. Outside of work, she enjoys photography, sunsets, and volunteering in her community.

Deeqa Hamid

Deeqa Hamid is a social work professional experienced in advocating for individuals affected by domestic violence and homelessness. She holds certifications in Domestic Violence 01 & 02 and child trauma, abuse, and neglect.
During her practicum at Focal Point, she mentored school-aged children in group therapy addressing bullying, discrimination, and challenges related to poverty or domestic violence, and researched adoption dynamics, including interracial adoption.

Joanna Onorato

Joanna, originally from Alaska, earned her Master’s in Social Work from USU-Moab after studying philosophy, political science, and Spanish at Montana State University. She is a bilingual therapist specializing in trauma, depression, and anxiety, using CBT, somatic therapy, and EMDR.

At the Multicultural Counseling Center, Joanna creates a safe, supportive space for healing. Outside of work, she enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding, and spending time outdoors with her dogs.

Amira, originally from Colombia, moved to the U.S. at age 28. She holds a degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Utah and has experience working with teenagers and trauma clients.

Lauren, originally from Virginia, earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Utah State University. She works with clients of all ages, supporting them in achieving their treatment goals and applying coping skills using a variety of evidence-based approaches. Lauren is bilingual in Spanish and sees clients over Zoom.

Mario, originally from Jalisco, Mexico, completed his academic studies in Aguascalientes and holds certifications in Peer Support, Family Peer Support, Case Management, and Suicide Prevention. He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Theology. At the Multicultural Counseling Center, Mario supports clients in crisis by connecting them with essential resources and services.

Outside of work, Mario enjoys watching movies, visiting lakes, and staying active through exercise.

Michelangelo Campos, originally from Florida and raised in Utah, is bilingual and is pursuing a degree in Social Work and SUDC at Salt Lake Community College. He previously worked as a chef before transitioning to social work, bringing creativity and dedication to his work with clients.

Timothy is a Master of Social Work student at Utah Valley University, passionate about supporting individuals and families on their mental health journey. Bilingual in English and Spanish, he is dedicated to providing compassionate and culturally responsive care to diverse communities.

Deeanna is an Associate Clinical Mental Health Counseling Extern and Certified Prevention Specialist finishing her master’s with a Marriage and Family Therapy emphasis. She uses a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive approach to support children, adolescents, families, and seniors.

Max Oliver
Max, originally from Seattle, Washington, is in their final year of the University of Utah’s Master of Social Work program. They are fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese and are committed to providing trauma-informed care tailored to each client’s needs.

As an LGBTQ therapist at the Multicultural Counseling Center, Max is passionate about supporting minoritized communities and has experience working with queer and trans youth. In their free time, they enjoy playing with the Salt Lake Symphony and trying new foods around the valley.

Hector Tapia
Hector Tapia, MSW, is a Couples and Trauma Therapist specializing in trauma, anxiety, and couples therapy for adults. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), he helps clients understand how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors interact, guiding intentional changes for meaningful growth.

At the Multicultural Counseling Center, Hector provides a safe, nonjudgmental space for clients to explore experiences, build resilience, and reconnect with their inner strength. He offers therapy in both individual and couples formats.
